How does BBL® work?

BBL® delivers calibrated photo-thermal energy directly to hair follicles. By adjusting the wavelength to match your skin characteristics, we optimize treatment for your needs. Hair responds best to light therapy during the anagen (active growth) phase, when BBL® selectively warms the follicle, disrupting its nutrient supply and inhibiting regrowth. Since follicles cycle through phases at different times, a treatment series ensures comprehensive results. Your clinician will create a customized schedule based on your goals and target areas.

What areas can be treated?

BBL® hair reduction provides a safe, efficient, and reliable option for managing unwanted hair. The treatment is appropriate for virtually any body area, including the face, neck, underarms, bikini line, legs, and arms.

Can tanned skin be treated?

Recent sun exposure or tanning bed use is not compatible with BBL® treatment. Tanned skin contains elevated melanin levels that may absorb the light energy meant for hair follicles. We recommend avoiding sun exposure in treatment areas for at least three weeks prior to your session. Self-tanning products should be completely faded from the skin 1 to 2 weeks prior to treatment.

How long will it take to recover?

Recovery time varies based on the individual treatment area. In most instances, there is no required downtime, and you can return to your regular activities right away. Some mild redness may appear temporarily following the procedure.

Pre and post Care Guidelines

Preparing for Your Appointment:

For optimal results, please prepare for your appointment by shaving the treatment area with 1-2 days of stubble.
It is essential to stop waxing or plucking hairs at least 3 days prior to your laser hair reduction treatment.
Avoid sun exposure to the treatment area. When the skin produces pigment in response to sun exposure, the risk of burns and changes in skin coloration increases significantly.
Stop the application of self-tanner and tanning beds 3-4 weeks prior to treatment.
Discontinue use of photosensitivity medications such as Doxycycline, Minocycline, Isotretinoin (Sotret), Claravis, Amnesteem, and PDT.
If you have a history of cold sores, your provider may prescribe an antiviral medication.
Notify your provider if you have a history of seizures or migraines.
Do not have an active rash or infection in the treatment area.
Avoid Accutane for at least 6 months.
You can not have this treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Post-Treatment Care & What to Expect:

Mild redness and minor swelling may occur immediately after your session, but typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours.
A warm, sunburn-like sensation is normal. Treat the area gently during this time.
Avoid picking or scratching your skin. Until sensitivity subsides, refrain from:
- Applying makeup to the treatment area
- Using scented products, deodorants, exfoliants (Retin-A, glycolic/salicylic acids), acne medications, or harsh scrubbing
- Washing with hot or cold water. Use lukewarm water only
- Shaving the treated area
- Chlorinated pools and spas
- Activities that cause excessive sweating
A cool compress can provide comfort if the area feels warm, typically needed only within the first 12 hours.
Vitamin E or aloe vera may offer soothing relief when applied to the treated area.
Should any crusting develop, apply antibiotic ointment twice daily and avoid picking to prevent infection or scarring.
If skin breaks or blistering occurs, apply antibiotic ointment and contact Alora Aesthetics immediately. Keep the area moisturized and protected from the sun.
While uncommon, some patients may experience hives. If you notice a raised, irritated rash, please contact our office.
Do not use alternative hair removal methods (such as tweezing, waxing, or depilatory creams) during your treatment series, as this may compromise the results.
Avoid sun exposure for 14 days post-treatment. The skin is more susceptible to sunburn and pigmentation changes. Keep the area covered and apply SPF 30 or higher. Sun-related blistering has been documented up to 72 hours after treatment.
Treated hair may shed anywhere from a few days to 4 weeks following your session. Hair may appear to "grow" during this time. This is a normal part of the shedding process.
