Kybella® is an FDA-approved injectable intended to reduce unwanted fat beneath the chin permanently. It works by breaking down and destroying fat cells, preventing them from storing or accumulating fat in the future.
The active ingredient in Kybella® is synthetic deoxycholic acid, a molecule found in the body naturally that helps break down and absorb dietary fat. When administered beneath the chin, the injection breaks down fat cells. After these cells are removed, they do not regenerate, leading to a noticeable decrease in fullness in the treated area. After achieving your desired results, additional treatments are typically unnecessary.
Most patients tolerate the procedure well. To improve comfort, your provider may apply a numbing cream or use an ice pack before treatment.
The most common side effects are swelling, redness, bruising, mild bleeding at the injection site, temporary pain or discomfort, and occasionally, numbness caused by nerve irritation. These effects are usually temporary and resolve on their own.
Some swelling is expected immediately following treatment. Moderate swelling can last up to 72 hours and can usually be hidden with clothing, while mild swelling may persist for several weeks and gradually subsides over time.
Most patients begin noticing visible improvements within 2 to 3 months (about 60–90 days) after treatment.
The number of sessions varies for each person, depending on the amount of fat and individual goals. Treatments are scheduled at least one month apart, with a maximum of six sessions recommended. Clinical studies show that many patients required multiple treatments, with 59% completing six sessions to achieve optimal results.
Kybella® is not recommended for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding.
